When he’s ripped off on the road, he celebrates, happy to go home and teach his traveling students about the latest scam. Learn from his mistakes rather than your own. After spending a third of his adult life living out of a rucksack in Europe, Rick knows exactly how you can enjoy maximum travel thrills for every mile, minute, and dollar in your next adventure.
Questions/Answers
Where in the World was Rick Steves on Monday (10/19)?: IRAN
Hi, I’m Rick Steves. Today I’m in a country about the size of Alaska that definitely marches to its own beat. Its mile-high capital is home to 14 million people. Ancient columns rising from rugged ruins recall the country’s ancient glory, but today its wealth is largely underground. Credit cards are worthless and cash is king. This country is Nirvana for pistachio lovers like me and here they are washed down with tea but never beer. It’s a country veiled in mystery, and not many Americans travel here, though the US used to have close ties with a former government.
Where in the World was Rick Steves on Tuesday (10/20)?: LONDON
Hi, I’m Rick Steves. Today I’m in a cosmopolitan city known for its world-class museums that contain art by Rembrandt, Monet and others. The main square, guarded by lions, is named after a Spanish cape. Karl Marx, Vincent Van Gogh, Jimi Hendrix and many others have called this city home. Vast, leafy parks in the center are perfect for a stroll, as is its riverside promenade. On the skyline gleaming skyscrapers compete with a massive church dome, delicate spires and a very big wheel.
Where in the World was Rick Steves on Wednesday (10/21)?: ROME
The river running through this hilly city flows past colorful neighborhoods -- including a Jewish ghetto – that are perfect for wandering. Art treasures fill the museums and churches, but crossing the busy streets is an art in itself. The cuisine scene here includes saltimbocca, carciofi and Frascati wine from the nearby hills. One famous landmark is known by locals as the “Typewriter”. While not the first capital of the country, this has long been a place that all roads lead to.
Where in the World was Rick Steves on Thursday (10/22)?: PARIS
Today I’m in one of the world’s most-loved cities. A tribe that gave the city its name lived here before the Romans arrived. In the summer, a beach right in the city’s center is filled with sun-worshippers. Artists have flocked here for centuries – and still do. Pedestrian bridges offer legendary views near major museums that chronicle the course of Western civilization. The most famous monument in town was ridiculed and despised when it was first built, but is now an iconic part of the skyline.
Where in the World is Rick Steves on Friday, (10/23)?: ISTANBUL
Today I’m in a city known by many names that straddles a strategic strait. Busy boats ply the waters and can whisk us away to what feels like another continent. Savvy shoppers enjoy the spicy markets and lively bargaining. Simit (see-meet), raki (raw-ku) and seafood are some of the local specialties. A Roman obelisk punctuates the skyline along with domes and minarets. Neighborhoods range from dilapidated and crumbling to gleaming and modern. But wherever you wander, the locals are quick with a smile.
Where in the World was Rick Steves on Saturday (10/24)?: COSTA RICA
Today I’m in a country that is bathed by the waters of two oceans. Though it’s only the size of Vermont and New Hampshire combined, its landscape includes volcanoes, beaches and rain forests filled with exotic flora and fauna. Surfing and hiking are popular activities. Tourism and coffee drive the economy. There is a stable, democratic government, and despite the history of unrest in the rest of the region, this country abolished its army in 1949.
