A Retirement and a Resignation

It’s transition time for two well-loved Bay Area music directors. After 22 years of service as Professor of Music at the University of California at Davis, Jeffrey Thomas now looks forward to his emeritus status which will allow him to further dedicate his time and expertise to the organization that he co-founded thirty years ago, the American Bach Soloists. He will also continue to host KDFC’s Sunday mornings, with Sacred Concert (7am-9am) and Baroque By the Bay (9am-11am). We congratulate Jeffrey on his distinguished academic career and can’t wait to see more of him in the hallways and studios of KDFC.

The resignation comes from Berkeley Symphony Music Director, Joana Carneiro, wrapping up nine years of service to the East Bay orchestra, known throughout the music world for its groundbreaking programming and adventurous artistic vision. Executive Director Rene Mandel announced that a committee had been formed to seek the next Music Director. Although it was not mentioned in the official press release, I think I have an idea of what’s keeping Carneiro in Portugal for the time being. She gave birth to triplets just over a year ago and, last month, she welcomed another baby! Happy, if daunting, news.
