The San Francisco Symphony has just announced its plans for the upcoming 2017-18 season, which include a centennial tribute to Michael Tilson Thomas‘ longtime friend and colleague Leonard Bernstein, a semistaged production of Mussorgsky’s Boris Godunov, another recording for their SFS Media label, and a roster of outstanding soloists and guest conductors.

Their focus on Bernstein stretches throughout the season, with works MTT has chosen to represent the breadth of his repertoire: a hint of things to come with the Overture to Candide at the opening gala (there will be a full concert production of the opera later in the season); the Chichester Psalms; his piano and orchestra Symphony No. 2, The Age of Anxiety with Jean-Yves Thibaudet; more vocal and jazz-tinged works; plus the Symphonic Dances from West Side Story, and the complete soundtrack played live as part of the Film Series. Daniil Trifonov will be in residence with a solo Chopin recital, a duet program with Sergei Babayan, and a Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 3 with the Symphony. At the end of the season, the original, less-frequently heard version of Mussorgsky’s Boris Godunov, in a semi-staged production of the famed opera. Stanislav Trofimov will be singing the title role.
