A practical joke. A secret rendezvous. One man’s elaborate plan for revenge leads to a rousing evening of mistaken identities, flirtations, and light-hearted deceit in Johann Strauss’ most celebrated operetta, Die Fledermaus. Set in 19th-century Vienna, this delightful farce is filled with effervescent melodies, lilting waltzes and charming sentiment. From the sparkling overture to the rollicking tribute to champagne, the Waltz King’s madcap masterpiece is the jewel of the golden age of operetta.
A mysterious forest. A tempting gingerbread house. Two imaginative siblings embark on a precarious adventure to find something to eat when their fortunes turn for the worse. This enduring fairy tale of lost children, candy sweets and an evil witch comes to life in an enchanting holiday production of Engelbert Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel – a 19th-century opera admired for its fun and folk-music-inspired themes, including the famous “Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep.”
Verdi’s Il trovatore has long been a staple of opera houses all over the world, and OSJ has produced it only rarely, as it requires rare voices. We look forward to presenting a cast of accomplished artists who will sing under Music Director Joseph Marcheso’s baton, and be directed by a truly insightful stage director, Brad Dalton. As an aside, this is an opera that helped make Irene Dalis, Opera San Jose’s founder, one of the most celebrated dramatic mezzo sopranos in the world.
A quest for enlightenment and honor. A mystical story about the power of love. A young prince discovers a flute with magic and a princess who will make him whole. Mozart’s fantastical and comical tale draws you into a world of magic fantasy, complete with a giant serpent, a secret brotherhood, and a lovesick bird catcher.
