Conductor Neville Marriner passed away on Sunday; he was 92. If I had a dime for every time I’ve said “Sir Neville Marriner on the air, I’d be rich. Come to think of it, I AM rich for having listened to the many, many recordings Sir Neville made over the years with the ensemble he founded in his living room in 1958.
“The Academy of St. Martin in the Fields” took its name from the church where it made its debut, just off Trafalgar Square in London. The rest is musical history! And in case the musical legacy weren’t enough, here’s Norman Lebrecht on Neville Marriner, the ultimate nice guy.
