Hear Chanticleer’s 40th Anniversary Concert | Sunday 8pm

One magical evening in 1978 nine gentlemen, adorned in white tie and tails, lit candles inside the Old Mission Dolores and introduced San Francisco to a newly formed vocal ensemble called Chanticleer. Since those humble beginnings, more than 120 men have sung with the ensemble, more than 40 records have been made, and two Grammy Awards have been won by this “orchestra of voices.”

On June 27, 2018, Chanticleer celebrated the 40th Anniversary of that first San Francisco performance at the same Old Mission Dolores with a group of longstanding friends and supporters. And you can hear that performance broadcast on Classical KDFC this Sunday, July 15th at 8pm, hosted by our arts producer Jeffrey Freymann. The program is mostly from the Renaissance (including five works sung on their first concert) and ends with a nod to the many pieces that they’ve commissioned over their 40 years. Here’s more:

Now is the Month of Maying – Thomas Morley (arr. Evan Price)
Hard by a Crystal Fountain – Thomas Morley
If Ye Love Me – Thomas Tallis
Ave verum corpus – William Byrd
O Clap Your Hands – Orlando Gibbons
Signasti Domine – Francisco Guerrero
Circumdederunt me dolores mortis – Juan Gutierrez de Padilla
Da Jakob nu das Kleid ansah – Ludwig Senfi

Lamentatio Sanctae Matris Ecclesiae Constantinopolitanae – Guillaume Dufay
Bonjour, mon coeur – Philippe de Monte
