Notes from the Fires: In the Still of the Night

Let’s raise a glass to three Adirondack chairs, assorted charcuterie, a couple bottles of good wine, and the peace and quiet of sunset in Altadena, which combined gave married musicians Amanda McIintosh and Christopher Still the most normal night they’ve had since the Eaton fire took their home.

And in this episode of Notes from the Fires, host John Rabe takes you to this magical evening.

Did you notice? We didn’t add music to the interview. The crickets were enough. But we’re closing the episode with John Ireland’s lovely Evening Song, played by cellists Julian Lloyd Webber and Jiaqin Cheng, and pianist John Lenahan.

Notes from the Fires: Tesserae

Perhaps no musicians we’ve heard from in Notes from the Fires so far have lost so much … yet retained so much optimism. Alex Opsahl and Ian Pritchard, founders of the Baroque ensemble Tesserae, were in Europe with their two young boys on January 7.

This episode of Notes from the Fires introduces us to Christopher Still, second trumpet for the LA Phil. Still lived in Altadena with his wife Amanda, their two young sons, and their two dogs, Luna and Karl Von Hoobie-Doobie. They got out of the house 15-20 minutes after he saw fire in Eaton Canyon.
