Notes from the Fires: This Altadena musician takes back “Burning Down the House”

A few weeks ago, we met Brandon Jay, the founder of Altadena Musicians, a group that facilitates instrument donations to fire victims. More than 1,000 instruments have been donated so far!

Brandon and his wife Gwen - who make a living scoring TV shows - also lost their home. They’re renting a house in Monrovia - with a music studio on the ground floor. And that’s where he talked with Notes from the Fires host John Rabe.

Since Brandon and his family played The Talking Heads’ “Burning Down the House” at a community concert soon after the fires, we thought it was finally okay to play - as Altadena and The Palisades rise from the ashes - Stravinsky’s “Firebird.” We’ll be listening to the finale, with Esa-Pekka Salonen leading the Philharmonia Orchestra.

Notes from the Fires: Tesserae

Perhaps no musicians we’ve heard from in Notes from the Fires so far have lost so much … yet retained so much optimism. Alex Opsahl and Ian Pritchard, founders of the Baroque ensemble Tesserae, were in Europe with their two young boys on January 7.
