Peek Behind the Scenes of KDFC’s Historic Move

Pop CultureCommunity

KDFC President Bill Lueth in his home office

Greetings from our homes to yours. Thanks for your continuing encouragement and support of KDFC.

As many of you are aware, several months ago we lost our lease and embarked on a journey to find a new home. This obstacle turned into an opportunity, leading to the development of a wonderful broadcast center all of us can enjoy. We’ll have space for our studios and offices — in addition to live music performance spaces allowing for special events and new collaborations with our downtown arts partners. We can’t wait to welcome you to our new space, which will soon be “Your Window to the Music.”

I want to share with you the exciting progress of our move into new studios and offices and a little about the “joy of moving” the KDFC staff experienced. While the timeline was pushed back by 5 months because of the world we’re in, we have now officially started construction in our new space located in the San Francisco Arts District on the second floor in the new Bowes Performing Arts Center of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.

Given our lease situation, we had to be out of our offices by March 1st. At the time, it was painful, but since the Shelter-in-Place order came just a few weeks later, the tight timing of the move proved to be serendipitous. The KDFC staff worked together to move our office and broadcast equipment. Everyone chipped-in and we didn’t miss a single note on-air!

We are so excited to move in right across from Davies Symphony Hall and the SF Opera House and having the opportunity to expand our partnerships with the arts groups throughout the area.

We’re very grateful to our arts partners welcoming us to the neighborhood. We all know our collaboration makes for a vital arts community. Here’s Matthew Shilvock, the General Director for the San Francisco Opera, looking back at our location with a message for you:

Right back at you Matthew.

With plans to move-in early in 2021, we have announced our building campaign Your Window to the Music to make this dream come true. An anonymous donor is offering a $250K dollar-for-dollar match available right now to all who would like to support the endeavor and the future of KDFC in this exciting new location.

And here’s the future!

With your help, we’ll create a wonderful broadcast center for you to keep the music playing. We’ll have special events and new collaborations. We can’t wait to welcome you to “Your Window to the Music.”
